Weightlifting Under 16: Introducing Strength Sport

The under-16 level was the youngest weightlifting group on the archived Erbil Sport Club site. Only the title survives, so this article is general information and does not name athletes or give results.

The right starting point

For athletes under 16 the main goal is learning movement, not lifting heavy. Coaches often start with bodyweight squats, overhead positions, hip hinges and balance drills. Light technique bars are used for many months before any serious loading.

Building blocks

  • Mobility: shoulders, hips and ankles need enough range of motion.
  • Core stability: a strong trunk keeps the spine safe.
  • Coordination: the Olympic lifts are fast, so timing matters.
  • Attitude: patience, focus and respect for equipment.

Supervision and rules

Every session should be supervised. Equipment should be sized for the athlete, the floor should be clear, and lifters should learn how to drop a bar safely.

Growth and rest

Young athletes grow at different speeds. A balanced week includes other sports, play and enough sleep. Pain, dizziness or loss of form are reasons to stop.

What comes next

Athletes can move on to the under-18 group when coaches judge them ready. More about the club is in About Erbil Sport Club.

Parents can support progress by asking about the coach’s qualifications, visiting a session and encouraging a balanced week. Small steps, repeated often, build the best foundations for later years.
