Handball was one of the six sports on the archived Erbil Sport Club website, and the first team was its senior level. The archived page has no text beyond its title, so this explainer covers the sport in general terms and says nothing about real players or fixtures.
The game in brief
Handball is a fast indoor team sport. Each side has seven players on court, six outfield players and a goalkeeper, and the aim is to throw the ball into the opponent’s goal. The side with more goals at the end wins. Matches normally consist of two halves of 30 minutes.
Key rules
- A player may take up to three steps with the ball, then must pass, shoot or dribble.
- The ball can be held for a limited time before it must be played.
- Only the goalkeeper may enter the goal area.
- Tackling is allowed within limits, but pushing, holding and dangerous contact are penalised.
Skills that matter
Quick passing, accurate throwing, strong defence and fast transitions from defence to attack decide matches. Goalkeepers need sharp reflexes and courage.
Why it is fun to watch
Because goals come often and play changes direction rapidly, handball is exciting even for newcomers.
