Volleyball Under 18: Skills, Rules and Teamwork

The archived Erbil Sport Club website listed a youth volleyball team for players under 18. The page contains no text beyond its title, so this article is a general introduction to the sport and does not report on the club’s squad.

The basics

Two teams of six players face each other across a net. Each side tries to ground the ball on the other side while keeping it from touching the floor on its own. A team may touch the ball up to three times before sending it over. Sets are played to 25 points with a two-point lead, and a match is usually won by taking three sets.

Core skills

  • Serve: starts each rally; accuracy matters more than power.
  • Pass (receive): controls the first contact, usually with forearms.
  • Set: places the ball for an attacker.
  • Attack (spike): drives the ball down into the opposing court.
  • Block and defend: stop or dig the opponent’s attack.

Rotation

When a team wins the serve, its players rotate one position clockwise. This keeps everyone playing front-row and back-row roles.

Developing as a youth team

Communication is the heart of volleyball. Players call for the ball, signal plays and encourage each other. Coaches usually mix technical drills with small games so skills are practised under realistic pressure.

For beginners, a simple route is to practise passing against a wall, then in pairs, then in small games of three against three before moving to a full six-a-side match.
