The first team is the senior level in each sport on the archived Erbil Sport Club site, and cycling was no exception. The page text has not survived, so this article covers cycling in general and does not name riders or report results.
Disciplines
- Road cycling: races on public roads, including mass-start events and time trials. Success depends on stamina, tactics and teamwork.
- Track cycling: short, fast events on a banked oval, from sprints to endurance races.
- Mountain biking: rough terrain, steep climbs and technical descents that test bike handling and fitness.
What elite riding requires
Senior riders usually train many hours a week, with structured plans that balance hard sessions and recovery. They study pacing, learn to draft behind teammates to save energy, and pay close attention to equipment, tyre pressure and nutrition during long events.
Team roles
In road races, riders take on roles such as leader, climber, sprinter or helper. Helpers shield the leader from the wind and fetch bottles, and the team plans its tactics together.
Staying safe
Medical checks, proper helmets, well-serviced bikes and obeying road rules reduce risk. Organisers usually provide marshals and support vehicles, but riders still need to ride predictably.

Newcomers who want to try the sport can begin with club rides, a helmet and a basic road bike, then decide which discipline suits them best.
