The under-14 group was the youngest football category on the archived Erbil Sport Club website. The page has no text apart from the title, so this article gives general advice on football for young players and does not describe the club’s squad.
What matters at this age
For players under 14 the priorities are enjoyment, basic technique and a positive attitude. Winning matters less than learning. Children develop at different rates, so patience from coaches and parents is vital.
Skills to build
- Ball control: using both feet, receiving the ball cleanly and turning with it.
- Passing: short and accurate before long.
- Dribbling and balance: moving past an opponent with confidence.
- Shooting: technique first, power later.
- Awareness: looking up, positioning and understanding space.
Small-sided games
Smaller teams on smaller pitches give each child more touches and more decisions per minute. Many coaches rely on these games because they feel like real football but suit young players.
Health and safety
Warm-ups, proper boots, shin guards and water are standard. Training load should be moderate, with time for rest, and children should not specialise too narrowly too early.
Next steps
Players who continue progress to the under 18 group and later the second team. For more on the club, see About Erbil Sport Club.
