Cycling Under 16: Starting Out Safely and Smartly

The under-16 category was the youngest cycling group on the archived Erbil Sport Club website. The archived page contains only a title, so the guidance below is general and does not describe real riders, coaches or results.

Choosing the right bike

A bike that fits matters more than an expensive one. The rider should be able to stand over the top tube with a little clearance and reach the handlebars without stretching. Saddle height should let the leg stay slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Growing riders need their set-up checked regularly.

First steps

  • Begin with short rides on quiet roads or paths away from heavy traffic.
  • Add a few minutes each week rather than jumping to long distances.
  • Practise braking, turning and looking over the shoulder.
  • Ride with a partner or group, and tell someone the route.

What young riders learn

At this age the focus is on balance, handling, road awareness and group etiquette, such as holding a steady line, calling out hazards and keeping a safe gap. Fun should come first, since riders who enjoy the sport stay with it for longer.

Equipment and care

A well-fitted helmet is a must. Gloves, glasses and bright clothing help, and a small repair kit for punctures is useful. After wet rides, wipe the bike down and lubricate the chain.

Looking ahead

Riders who keep improving can move up to the under-18 youth team and eventually the first team. A Kurdish page for this group is also available at pedal cycling under 16.
